This past weekend, Kelly Guzman and Lynn Aguilera attended the Healthcare Design Expo & Conference (HCD) in Phoenix, AZ. On Saturday, November 10, both participated in a workshop that focused on Transition Planning hosted by the Nursing Institute for Healthcare Design (NIHD). NIHD selected leaders in the field of Transition Planning to educate participants on what Transition Planning is, why it is important, who is involved and how to plan for a successful activation of a new facility. Kelly, alongside other experts, shared her experience on how to plan for and execute a successful transition project. A key takeaway from the session is that project success is usually determined by the early engagement of end users in the planning process.
“It was great being able to collaborate with all of the industry experts and share our collective Transition and Activation planning experience and approach,” shared Kelly. “It is amazing what we can do when we put our heads together!”
On November 11, Lynn Aguilera presented alongside Jill Sullivan, Vice President of Strategic Space Planning and General Services, to discuss their experience activating Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. Their presentation When People Change But the Design Has Not: Lessons Learned from Design Concept, Transition Planning, and Post-Move had more than 200 participants attending the session. During the case study, Lynn and Jill explored the intricacies of a new hospital activation when many of the people who designed the space are no longer part of the project. They also provided lessons learned about communication, managing change requests, common transition issues, and best practices for managing the financial impacts of an activation.
“It was exciting to see so many people interested in our topic,” said Lynn. “We really appreciated the opportunity to share our lessons learned in the hope of helping other facilities with their future projects.”
